NHibernate 1.2 : not-found = ignore (many-to-one)

This is another excellent feature of NHibernate 1.2 that helps a lot to get legacy databases (90% of the world..? ;) ) working smoothly..

Why? Because in previous version orphaned records where always treated as an exception instead of having a more "soft" handling (Example: treat the object reference null).

If you are working with composite keys this scenario was even worse : valid null values (which should not be really be considered orphans) also raised an exception when 1 of it;s components is not null...

So, inside the Templates what we are doing is set that new XML property to "true" WHEN the relation is based on a composite key (please remmember you can always change the calculated value to whatever you like!).

NOTE: The only important thing to notice is that this will do an extra separate query (don't ask ME why, have no clue why that's needed.. )

NHibernate 1.2 support ICriteria.Count (yes!)

I've just found out that NHibernate 1.2 now supports, beside many new features, ICriteria count.

This feature is very important specially for asp.net 2.0 applications that work together with the object datasource. This is exactly the code that our asp.net 2.0 Templates in GenWise was needing to improve performance.

If the user did not added some filters some "big" tables could take quite a lot to load just because we could not page the count. The GenWise factory does support paging of the result by calling the appropiate ISession methods .

This will be included in the next update to the GenWise NHibernate Templates.

TechEd Barcelona 2006

First of all, this is my first BLOG entry !

We had a stand at Microsoft Tech-Ed 2006 Barcelona where we showed our new product : GenWise Studio ( www.genwise.com).The people's reaction was amazing! We've got MANY interested people and some of them actually extremely positive and surprised about what we have done! ( I must say it feels good to get all those positive reactions after having worked with the GenWise team so hard for >2 years ).

During the conference I've also confirmed the difference of approach that we have and how solid is our Template Technology (i will wrote more about this in other BLOG post in the future)I've added pictures and movies over TechEd Barcelona 2006...

One of the things I've learned during the conference is that developers do not like to read stuff while looking at the stands. Giving a free t-shirt of those kind of marketing things had more effect than actually a very big Powerpoint discussing some code generation stuff ;) The 1st day we had the powerpoint running and we noticed that did not worked at all so we switched to a 1 slide saying something like : "We will generate a complete web app in 5 mins"So, because I have spend some considerable amount of time making this PPT i am posting it here : GenWise Presentation

I would love to discuss code generation topics or any remarks!!
